A picture of the locks at Miraflores. As the boat comes in from the lake, it enters a lock, the water level is lowered, it then enters the next lock, etc. This process happens six times (three locks to raise the water level, three locks to lower it.) The water level had to be raised to 26m (85ft.)above sea level so that the boats can navagate through the mountain range they flooded out at Culebra Cut, the man-made valley that cuts through the Continental Divide in Panama.
