Biohuertos en Lima!
Today was organic gardening in Lima day!
I got up to meet with the Ricardo Palma gang at 6:40am and actually made it at 6:45am so when noone was there I figured I was late and hurried over to the meeting site which was a chicken restaurant next to a gas station where the combi was going to pick us up. Um, definitely no one there. Oh, except lots of scary probably partially drunk Peruvian men. So I walked quickly by that local and up the street where most of the volunteers that were walking that way were certain to come from. And I was right and within 20 seconds I saw David, another volunteer and we chatted as we walked back down the street.
Ok, combi comes and we go to Lima and the class is really cool, I wish I could witness the lecture part again because it is always packed with cool information and delivered in rapid fire spanish. So, I know I'm always missing something but I really get annoyed at this when it is something that is good to know and that I'm certain to use at my site.
Then we learned about seeds today and how to transplant plants and how to harvest seeds from fruits. (Did you know that if you leave the tomato seeds covered in that goo stuff that surrounds them in the tomato, that they won't germinate?)
Then we were on our own to roam around Lima. And the PC told us where the mall was, and that was it. So, we all went to the mall, which was really nice, definitely better than the malls in Tucson. (sorry, tucson) I saw two starbucks while we were there but alas, this will have to wait another week. We went to a deli and I got a vegetarian sandwhich (oh, it was amazing) and a papaya with yogurt and honey drink. And there was much rejoicing.
We then went to the grocery store and I purchased Museli, Pringles, and some soap. I couldn't find any LICORICE or TRISCUITS. Just thought I would put those in caps in case anyone wanted to send, um, anything, to me.....
We taxied it home which was a little more expensive (by 3 soles... 1 dollar) and about an hour less, and we got to sit the whole time, with seatbelts. Worth it? Possibly.
And.. then I got home and was sick for the night which is where I left off for the next blog... keep reading!
